Sueyon Yang
Korean artist, painter and researcher
Sueyon Yang (b.1988) is an artist, painter and researcher. She obtained her BA of Fine Arts (2011) and MFA (2014) in Korean traditional painting from the Seoul National University, Korea. She then went onto receive her second MFA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2019). Currently, she has completed her DFA in Korean traditional painting from Seoul National University. Sueyon’s works focus on life and death, particularly on fear of death and futile desire for immortality. She visualizes her theme through recreating the mythical symbols of longevity using Korean traditional painting techniques and materials which she studied while working as a researcher producing replicas of cultural heritages for national museums in South Korea. She would like to explore new possibilities of the traditional painting by combining traditional materials and contemporary expressions.
