Sean Powers, an American artist based in London, UK, explores the intersection of nature, abstraction, and posthumanism in his paintings. Graduating with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2014) and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art (2024), Powers seeks to create paintings that evoke a sense of otherworldly encounter, oscillating between the familiar and the unknown. Through a psychedelic process of abstraction, informed by both natural observation and futuristic sensibilities, he utilizes natural subjects and paint materials to convey idiosyncratic intonations and delve into the relationship between human and nonhuman experience. Balancing elements of science fiction, mystical abstraction, and natural observation, Powers constructs open-ended narratives that challenge conventional notions of landscape painting and offer a generative experience predicated on a purpose without a purposiveness, resulting in a graphic and haptic experience.
