Artist Profile

Shams Uddin
Pakistani artist
Shams Uddin (born Mianjo Goth, Pakistan), also known as Shamsuddin Tanwri, is a Pakistani artist based in Lahore, whose work seeks to revive the Mughal form of miniature painting. He received his BFA with honors from the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, between 2010 and 2011. Uddin’s practice challenges the limitations of classical painting, specifically exploring and revitalizing Mughal miniature art through his unique interpretation of pictorial references and the use of opulent gold and silver leaves. His artistic vision draws inspiration from the grandeur of Mughal kings and their romanticized lives, employing techniques like graphite powder, graphite pencils, and white paint to imbue his work with a sense of history while offering a fresh perspective on this traditional art form. He continues to live and work in Lahore.
