Leila Fatemi (b. 1991, Milan) is a contemporary visual artist based in Tkaronto/Toronto. Through a blend of material and textual research, she explores themes of postcolonialism, gender, and spirituality across photography, collage, archival materials, textile, pattern, and printmaking. Fatemi’s work challenges viewers to consider their role in the representation and cultural consequences of Orientalized subjects, offering alternative perspectives on the colonial gaze and ethnic representation by employing subversion and reclamation as tools to resist imperialist legacies. A BFA graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University, Fatemi’s work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally, recognized with the Clyde & Co. Art Award, a Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award nomination in 2020, and the Open Studio Black, Indigenous, People(s) of Colour Residency in 2022-2023.
