Artist Profile

Joey Hernandez
California-based artist
Joey Hernandez is an award-winning California-based artist whose work explores the beauty and complexity of vision loss. Joey began to lose her sight in high school due to Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON), a condition that left her legally blind and caused her to constantly see moving neon dots. Frustrated by the lack of media representation of her experience, she turned to acrylic painting to express how she sees the world. Her paintings often feature neon colors, blurred faces, and loose, expressive brush strokes that reflect her unique perspective. She incorporates tactile tools, adaptive strategies, and large-scale canvases to work up close and in fine detail. Joey’s work has been featured in multiple exhibitions, including the APH InSights Art Competition. A proud alumna of California State University, Fullerton, she aspires to become an orientation and mobility specialist, helping other blind and visually impaired people travel independently.
