Artist Profile
Makef
Self-taught contemporary painter from Benin
Makef is a self-taught contemporary painter born in Cotonou, Benin, where he currently lives and works. From a young age, art became an inseparable part of his life, as he filled every scrap of paper with drawings during school. After completing his secondary studies, he decided to pursue his passion professionally, receiving guidance from renowned local artists, particularly MAGOU, who supported and mentored him. Through this connection, he met French painter François Zenner, who further shaped his artistic vision. Constantly evolving through personal research and self-directed study, Makef has developed a unique artistic language centered on the human condition. His paintings often depict silhouetted figures, reflecting his belief that people are first seen masked, and true identity lies beneath the surface. Working primarily with oil and acrylic, he explores the fragility and complexity of human nature. Makef has exhibited his work in several African countries, in Europe, and regularly in Benin, establishing himself as one of the promising emerging artists of his generation.
