Mwaba Marie Chandia is a Zambian-born painter whose work bridges contemporary Afro-futurism, cultural heritage, and storytelling. She works primarily in two series: Where the Weird Things Are, a collection of acrylic paintings and installations imagining a future where women, plants, and insects merge into otherworldly beings, and Patterns, acrylic-on-canvas works layered with lino prints that celebrate womanhood and Zambian symbolism through vibrant colors and traditional hairstyles. Drawing on indigenous knowledge, ceremonial masks, fashion, and natural materials like cowrie shells and straw, Chandia’s practice explores identity, ancestral memory, and the enduring bond between people and nature.
