Artist Profile
Abena Oyiwaa
Self-taught visual artist based in Ghana
Angelina Ampofo Asomaning, professionally known as Abena Oyiwaa, is a self-taught visual artist based in Accra, Ghana, whose work explores the emotional landscapes and complexities of African womanhood through her signature style, Afro-fem Surrealism. Transitioning from a career in accounting, Abena channels her understanding of structure, balance, and observation into painting, creating surreal portraits that fuse symbolic elements (gold-toned bones, plants, and disjointed anatomy) to reflect themes of resilience, growth, motherhood, and self-acceptance. Her work serves as both a personal and collective meditation, offering women a space to recognize their inner strength, vulnerability, and untold stories.
