Artist Profile
Joseph Christian Ekom-Obong
Nigerian expressionistic artist
Joseph Christian Ekom-Obong is a Nigerian expressionistic artist working in painting and drawing, originally from Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and raised in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He holds an NCE in Fine and Applied Arts from the Federal College of Education, Osiele, and a Bachelor’s degree in Fine and Industrial Arts from the University of Uyo. Now a resident artist with Meta-iv Solution in Lagos, Joseph creates work inspired by the marginalization experienced by Africans because of their unique skin tones, as well as the beauty, history, and cultural richness that define the continent. His memories of childhood and the environments that shaped him also strongly inform his visual language. Working with acrylic, oil, and charcoal on canvas and card, he incorporates traditional African symbols such as Nsibidi, Adinkra, and Uli to honor cultural identity and reclaim its meaning. Joseph seeks to produce art that is both aesthetically captivating and deeply rooted in the collective voice of the African community, expressing what he affirms: “Art is a self-expression…”
