Artist Profile
Katesi Jacqueline Kalange
Ugandan multidisciplinary artist
Katesi Jacqueline Kalange (b. 1995) is a Ugandan multidisciplinary artist based in Kampala, working across sculpture, painting, and performance installation. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Industrial Design from Kyambogo University, where she is currently pursuing her Master’s degree. Using recycled and upcycled materials alongside acrylic paint, Kalange employs smudging and palette knife techniques to create evocative portraits and sustainable sculptural works developed through community engagement. Her practice centers on themes of women’s empowerment, gender inequality, and entrenched stereotypes surrounding Black women’s roles in African homes. Informed by personal interactions with women in Uganda, Senegal, and Ghana, her work confronts narratives that confine women to domestic labor, raising critical questions about care, rest, mental health, and self-determination. Through a dialogical approach, Kalange seeks to spark public discourse and encourage women to prioritize self-care, agency, and coexistence beyond imposed expectations.
