Artist Profile

Ebtihal Hussain
Sudanese painter based in Germany
Ebtihal Hussain (b. 1995, Doha, Qatar) is a Sudanese painter whose work celebrates the depth and dignity of Sudanese identity, particularly through the portrayal of women. Returning to Sudan at age five, she developed a passion for drawing, painting, and henna art, later formalizing her practice at the College of Fine and Applied Art in Khartoum, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2023. Her paintings, characterized by bold colors, flowing forms, and attention to portraiture, explore memory, social commentary, and the resilience of individuals within Sudan’s socio-political landscape. Hussain’s graduate project, Painting Shades of Sudanese Features, exemplifies her interest in representing women with poise, thoughtfulness, and self-assurance, while her broader practice engages with trauma, identity, and cultural narratives through both acrylics and watercolors. She has exhibited widely, participated in international workshops, and in 2023 received a distinguished production grant from the Goethe-Institut in Khartoum.
