Artist Profile
Alcides Malaika
Self-taught Angolan artist
Alcides Malaika (Angola) is a self-taught contemporary artist whose work transforms personal and collective experience into a powerful visual language of resilience and memory. Beginning to draw at the age of two, Malaika used art instinctively to navigate the challenges of growing up on the streets of Luanda. His practice developed within the Padre Horácio Reception Centre as part of the Meninos Pintores de Angola collective, where he found both mentorship and a space to cultivate his identity as an artist. His figurative paintings employ bold color and emotive composition to explore trauma, survival, and hope, reflecting the dignity of lived experience. Malaika’s work positions him as a significant voice in contemporary Angolan art, celebrating the transformative and redemptive power of creativity.
