Kofi Effah (Joseph Effah) is a visual artist born in Berekum, Ghana, currently working in Los Angeles. His practice centres on the use of buttons as a primary medium, a direction that began in 2007 after an accidental inclusion of a single button in an acrylic painting. Since then, he has developed a distinctive approach in which thousands of individual buttons are stitched onto prepared surfaces to form richly textured compositions that explore colour, rhythm, and material harmony. With a background in Fine Arts specialising in textiles and metal smithing, Effah’s work reflects a strong sensitivity to surface and construction, evident in the way he builds and prepares his grounds before sewing. His practice is driven by a desire to transform simple, everyday materials into intricate visual languages that invite viewers to engage with process, tactility, and collective form.
