Artist Profile
Zixiang Zhang
BioArt artist based in London
Zixiang Zhang is a Chinese artist based in London whose practice merges biology, material science, and art to explore the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. Through living bio artworks, she embraces unpredictability, allowing nature and time to actively shape each piece while emphasizing regeneration as a response to environmental crisis. Her work challenges human-centered approaches to climate change by drawing attention to ecological systems of decay, renewal, and interdependence: mycelium breaks down waste while fostering new growth, knitted fabrics reflect industrial excess, and straw evokes sustainable traditions and vernacular knowledge. Using slow, intentional techniques such as hand-knitting, wrapping, and layering, Zhang creates meditative works that stand in contrast to the speed and detachment of industrial production, inviting audiences to reconsider materiality, sustainability, and coexistence with nature.
