Artist Profile

Caroline Ross is an artist, maker and educator based in Hexham, UK, whose practice is rooted in close observation of the natural world and the use of wild, foraged and repurposed materials. Drawing, painting and crafting with pigments, inks and tools she makes herself—from earth pigments, chalk, oak galls, rusty nails, cherry tree gum, feathers and found natural objects—she explores the relationship between landscape, ecology and making. Alongside her studio practice, Ross teaches workshops across the UK and Europe on drawing, painting and the creation of traditional art materials and ancient crafts, both independently and through organisations including Plants and Colour and West Dean College. Her drawings, paintings and illustrations have appeared in books, journals and private collections, reflecting a lifelong commitment to material knowledge, handcraft and immersion in the living world.
