Artist Profile
Canaan J. Brown
Interdisciplinary artist based in the UK
Canaan J. Brown is an artist, filmmaker, and storyteller whose interdisciplinary practice reimagines the histories, mythologies, and futures of the Black experience. Through moving image, installation, and narrative-based works, he explores themes of freedom, Black excellence, spirituality, and collective memory, creating imaginative worlds that challenge dominant histories and invite more compassionate and courageous ways of understanding contemporary society. Brown's work is driven by a commitment to storytelling as a transformative force, blending historical research with speculative imagination to illuminate both personal and collective experiences. Brown completed an MA in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art in 2024 as a recipient of the Sir Frank Bowling Scholarship, having previously graduated with a First-Class BA (Hons) in Art and Design from the Birmingham Institute of Creative Arts.
