Artist Profile

Lucia Isolda Cunningham is a UK-based ecological artist, researcher, and educator whose interdisciplinary practice explores drawing beyond the human. Working across contemporary drawing, photography, observation, and posthuman theory, she investigates the subtle traces left by more-than-human life—including slugs, snails, leafminer larvae, fungi, lichens, and spiders—as forms of artistic expression and ecological presence. With more than three decades of exhibitions, teaching, talks, and research, Cunningham recently completed a Creative Arts PhD at Loughborough University, where her work examined drawing as a shared, more-than-human practice. By challenging conventional ideas of authorship and representation, she invites viewers to reconsider overlooked organisms as active participants in shaping the landscapes we inhabit. Her work fosters ecological awareness, attentiveness, and kinship, revealing drawing as an act of encounter between human and more-than-human worlds.
