Gabriel Mikulaco
Self-taught Croatian painter and draughtsman
Gabriel Mikulaco is a self-taught Croatian painter and draughtsman working primarily with oil, acrylic, ink, and pencil. His practice draws on surrealism, fantasy, mythology, and archaic visual motifs, creating enigmatic spaces where figuration and abstraction remain in constant tension. Beginning with fragments that emerge intuitively, often resembling pre-dream images, Mikulaco develops his works through drawing, layered compositions, and richly textured surfaces, allowing each image to evolve without a predetermined outcome. His paintings explore archetypes, fears, memory, and the interior states of human experience, bringing ancient narratives into dialogue with contemporary painting. Mikulaco has participated in cultural and museum projects across Croatia and received a jury prize at the Regional Domijada in 2017; his work was also presented at the Drawing Biennial Pula in 2025.
