Artist Profile
Josipa Krolo
Contemporary painter based in Croatia
Josipa Krolo (Croatia) is a contemporary painter whose practice examines social change, memory, and the relationship between place and identity. She studied at the Facultat de Belles Arts at Universitat de Barcelona and the Arts Academy of Split, where she completed her MA in 2018. Through painting, Krolo explores the transformation of familiar environments, often reflecting on urban development, collective memory, and the impact of economic and social forces on communities. Her Postseason series addresses the gentrification of her hometown of Split, examining the consequences of post-conflict privatization and the city’s dependence on tourism. Her work questions who has the right to inhabit and shape a place, and what traces of local identity remain within rapidly changing landscapes. Krolo has exhibited widely in Croatia and internationally, participated in artist residencies across Europe, and is a member of the Croatian Association of Artists and the Croatian Freelance Artists Association.
