Artist Profile

Lerato Motaung (Katlehong, South Africa) is a visual artist based in Johannesburg. Drawing on memories of his youth in the North West Province, his upbringing in Katlehong township, and everyday life in metropolitan Johannesburg, Motaung creates intuitive works that weave the familiar with the imagined. His practice explores history, memory, and the intangible dimensions of human experience, situating them within an ambiguous space between past and present. Motaung has exhibited widely in South Africa and internationally, was a finalist for the PPC Imaginarium Awards in 2019, and received The Emergence Art Prize in 2020. His work has been presented in major exhibitions and is held in collections internationally, including Foundation H, the Africa First Collection, and other private and institutional collections.
