Artist Profile
Lindelwa Msimang
South African contemporary artist
Lindelwa Msimang is a South African contemporary artist born in 2001 at Edendale in Pietermaritzburg. Lindelwa has had a love for art since primary school, but she found herself studying civil engineering. Following high school, she rekindled her passion for artmaking by taking up photography. Lindelwa's work celebrates the masculinity and gender fluidity within her identity. She is more of a masculine female that has never been free to express her identity due to her surroundings. The spacious landscapes that emerge in her work represent the freedom and peace that she has been longing for her entire life. Roses are featured in her current work to speak about the fragility and the vulnerability that one can find when they are longing for freedom of expression. By including the figure of the photographer in her work, it is a commentary on the evolution of the camera a personal reflection on using the camera as a tool to both expose and mask identity.
