Akan David
Lagos-based visual artist
Akan David is a Lagos-based visual artist whose work explores themes of identity, folklore, and mythology rooted in African traditions. Born into a traditional priesthood family, his early exposure to rituals, narratives, and cultural expressions deeply informs his practice. A graduate of the University of Uyo with a Bachelor of Fine and Industrial Arts, Akan blends traditional and contemporary techniques, working fluidly with oils, acrylics, inks, watercolors, digital media, and sgraffito to create layered, textured compositions. His paintings reimagine African mythologies, serving as both cultural preservation and storytelling. His work has been exhibited in galleries and art festivals, earning recognition for its ability to capture and reinterpret ancestral narratives. Beyond his studio practice, Akan is a passionate advocate for art education, leading workshops and community initiatives to inspire others to embrace their heritage and creativity.
