Anaïs Zhang—known digitally as Anais Z.—is a Chinese-born, French artist holding a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Now based in Biarritz in the Basque Country, her practice is shaped by the landscapes and faces encountered throughout her travels, from Tibet and Macau to the American Midwest. In La Belle Époque, she reanimates archival photographs taken by her great-grandfather-in-law, an early 20th-century French photographer, infusing forgotten moments with contemporary color and sensitivity. Across her practice, Anaïs weaves a dialogue between past and future, East and West, memory and imagination, with exhibitions spanning the United States, France, and China.
