Artist Profile
Andreia Costa
Self-taught visual artist from Angola
Andreia Costa (b. 1997, Luanda, Angola) is a self-taught visual artist whose practice explores the intersections of cultural identity, memory, resilience, and the lived experiences of African women. Working between Luanda and Lisbon, she creates paintings that combine realism and hyperrealism with expressive brushwork and symbolic narratives, offering nuanced reflections on black femininity and contemporary African identity. Influenced by both personal experience and ancestral heritage, Costa’s work celebrates cultural pride while examining the emotional and social complexities that shape women’s lives. Through carefully constructed compositions, she reinterprets traditional visual symbols within a contemporary context, creating a dialogue between past and present. Since joining the Ateliê Belnique social project in 2019, Costa has established herself as an emerging voice in African contemporary art.
