Artist Profile
Birungi Kawooya
Ugandan artist
Birungi Kawooya creates creating collages featuring black women, dancers, and nature by hand cutting paper silhouettes and pairing them with vibrant African textiles. She takes inspiration from Ugandan classical Kiganda dance styles, flash dancing by The Nicholas Brothers and hiplet from Homer Bryant, interpreting these influences in her vibrant collages using layers of Ugandan batik fabrics and cutout card. She enjoys the challenge of capturing these complex and sophisticated dance moves in her 2-dimensional art.
