Artist Profile
Efrat Merin
London-based artist
Efrat Merin is a London-based artist and graduate of the Royal College of Art (MA Painting) and Turps Art School. Her practice merges lesbo-futuristic and Judeo-futuristic mythologies, employing a distinctive sgraffito technique developed through her experimentation with cold wax encaustic paint, where layered surfaces are scratched back to reveal concealed imagery beneath. Through this archaeological process of excavation and exposure, Merin creates works in which anthropomorphic female figures inhabit liminal spaces between birth and decay, embodying themes of desire, oppression, and liberation. In 2024, she was awarded the Arts Council England DYCP grant; in 2023, she received an a-n Artist Bursary and was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries; and in 2022, she won the Darbyshire Award for Emerging Art.
