Artist Profile
Etsu Egami
Contemporary multidisciplinary artist from Japan
Etsu Egami (b. 1994, Tokyo, Japan) is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores language, communication, and the complexities of human interaction. Having grown up in the United States and Europe and later lived and worked in China, Egami draws on her cross-cultural experiences and the communication barriers that emerge between languages and societies. Working across painting, drawing, video, and sound, she examines the limits of verbal expression, the ambiguity of meaning, and the instincts that shape human relationships. Her work transforms misunderstanding into a creative force, exploring how cultural differences can generate both conflict and new forms of connection. Through perceptive and often experimental approaches to communication, Egami invites viewers to question the authenticity of expression and consider how language, identity, and cultural exchange shape our understanding of one another. Her practice has received recognition from international curators, including Julie Jones of the Centre Pompidou and Chinese curator Feng Boyi.
