Artist Profile

Grace Carter-Knight
Auckland-based artist
Grace Carter-Knight is an Auckland-based artist and recent Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from Elam School of Fine Arts. Her work explores the intricate and often contradictory relationship between humans and insects, particularly flies. Drawing inspiration from New Zealand’s diverse native insect life, Carter-Knight delves into the tension between viewing insects as both insignificant pests and awe-inspiring marvels of nature. Collaborating with a taxonomist from the Auckland War Memorial Museum, she studied and painted preserved fly specimens, echoing the scientific process of naming and pinning for future generations. Her work invites viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness and mutual vulnerability of human and insect life within a shared ecological space.
