Artist Profile

Jan Raats is a South African artist working from his studio at Kupenda Africa Gallery in Montagu, Western Cape. Drawing on two decades of humanitarian experience in regions shaped by conflict and crisis, his vibrant Impressionistic paintings capture moments of emotion, expression, and human connection. Working primarily with his fingers, he combines intense colour, dynamic angles, and flowing forms to create energetic yet contemplative compositions. His recent practice incorporates repurposed plastic bottles and natural materials, reflecting a growing commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. Initially trained at the Johannesburg College of Art, Raats won the 2023 Casa Del Arte Art Prize in Mallorca and was a Top 10 finalist at Swiss Art Expo Zurich in 2022. His work is held in private and corporate collections, including UN City in Copenhagen.
