Artist Profile

Joon Bae
Korean-American painter
Joonhyung Bae (b. 1997) is a Korean-American painter whose work navigates the liminal space between figuration and abstraction, memory and sensation. After earning a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2023, he moved to London to pursue an MA at the Royal College of Art, where he is currently based and actively developing his practice. His paintings explore the unfolding of psychological and temporal states, often across multiple panels or within the quiet intensity of a single canvas, as seen in series like Transference, where time moves in reverse and the body dissolves into raw material. Drawing from psychoanalysis, Deleuzean philosophy, and fleeting moments from everyday life, Bae foregrounds intuition over theory, creating works that dwell in ambiguity and allow emotion, memory, and the body to coexist and mutate.
