Lydia Makin

Artist Profile

Lydia Makin
Contemporary painter from the US
Lydia Makin is a contemporary painter whose dynamic practice is characterized by energetic, large-scale compositions that pulse with movement and intensity. She holds a BA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art and an MA from the Royal College of Art, where she developed a distinctive visual language shaped by spontaneity and experimentation. Drawing inspiration from the dramatic compositions of Old Masters such as Caravaggio, Raphael, and Goya, Makin reinterprets these influences through a contemporary lens, creating works that evoke a sense of frenetic, almost cellular vitality. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in London and Miami, with presentations at Studio West, Gallery Rosenfeld, and PM/AM, where she also completed a residency, and she has received several awards including the Painters’ Stainers’ Company Scholarship and the Richard Ford Award.
