Artist Profile

Mara Zota is a Romanian visual artist based in Germany, currently studying Painting and Graphics at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Essen. Her practice explores the relationship between surface and depth, glamour and critique, using painting and mixed media to investigate beauty, femininity, desire, identity, and social expectations. Drawing on postfeminist perspectives, Zota embraces the contradictions between attraction and distance, empowerment and control, creating works that celebrate glamour and materiality while questioning the cultural systems behind them. Her work has been presented in exhibitions in Germany and internationally, including Young Blood 4.0 in Bucharest and projects associated with Academy POSITIONS Berlin.
