Artist Profile

Morenike Caxton-Martins
Visual artist based in London
Morenike Caxton-Martins is a London-based artist specializing in fine art, printmaking, and photography. A 2024 graduate of Central Saint Martins UAL with an MA in Art and Science, her practice is rooted in introspective explorations and extensions of self. As a Nigerian diasporan residing in England, Caxton-Martins navigates the complexities of finding her own path while maintaining a connection to her homeland, Lagos, Nigeria. She connects to her heritage through portraiture (of herself and family), exploring the space created by distance. Distinct childhood memories, particularly surrounding traditional Nigerian fruits, form the core of her work. Through casting, printing, and photography, she investigates the texture, color, materiality, and sensory qualities of these fruits, such as cocoa bean and agbalumo. These investigations propagate new forms and representations, unlocking, recalling, and locating childhood memories. By layering fruit imagery and family portraits using techniques like photo etching and UV printing, Caxton-Martins mixes nature with nurture, continuing a dialogue between subject (self/family) and object (fruit). Viewing her process through a retro-futuristic lens, she manipulates these objects to visit the past while creating a new future, aiming to reclaim, capture, and translate significant moments from her subconscious, conjuring and recreating the “sweetness” of her childhood and a nostalgic vision of Nigeria’s past socio-economic success.
