Artist Profile
Princia Matungulu
Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary artist
Born in 1999 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Princia Matungulu is a Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice combines weaving, sculpture, and storytelling to explore themes of identity, womanhood, and cultural memory. Drawing from her experiences as a Congolese-born immigrant and the traditions passed down through her mother, she uses weaving as both a material and metaphorical thread to connect histories, rituals, and narratives within the African diaspora. Her recent works reinterpret Congolese folktales known as Harishi, preserving these oral traditions while addressing the influence of Western media on African storytelling. A graduate of Wits University and recipient of the Young Womxn Studio Bursary (2021–2022), Matungulu has exhibited widely, including at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, and 1-54 Art Fair London. Through her art, she reclaims ancestral narratives and celebrates the resilience and creativity of African women.
