Artist Profile

Raymond Fuyana
Zimbabwean-born deaf visual artist
Raymond Fuyana is a Zimbabwean-born visual artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, whose practice is rooted in printmaking and influenced by surrealism. A Deaf artist, Fuyana explores themes of communication, perception, and emotional complexity through dreamlike landscapes that reflect his experiences navigating a hearing world. His work often combines classical architecture with African environments, creating layered, multidirectional spaces that speak to confusion, disconnection, and resilience. A recurring symbol in his art, the crow serves as a self-portrait and emotional interpreter within these surreal scenes. Fuyana began his formal training at Artist Proof Studio, joining the Saturday Youth Programme in 2015 before enrolling in the full-time printmaking course in 2016, where he completed his third year in 2018 and continued into the studio’s internship programme.
