Artist Profile

Roman Durcek
Slovak contemporary painter
Roman Durcek (Zlaté Moravce, Slovakia) is a Slovak contemporary painter based in Malé Vozokany, whose practice investigates the material and conceptual boundaries of painting. A graduate of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, where he completed his doctoral studies in 2022, Durcek approaches painting as an experimental field, engaging with pigments, substrates, and chemical processes such as oxidation to expand its expressive possibilities. His work combines material research with socio-critical reflection, addressing themes of existential tension, cultural memory, and the pressures of contemporary society. Through emblematic figurative compositions and references to classical art, he interrogates shifting value systems and the reinterpretation of cultural archetypes. Durcek is a recipient of the Martin Benka Award and a multiple finalist of the VÚB Painting of the Year and NOVUM Foundation Award, and he regularly exhibits in Slovakia and internationally.
