Artist Profile

Ruwan Hamdy
Architect and interdisciplinary artist based in Alexandria
Ruwan Hamdy (b. 1995) is an architect and interdisciplinary artist based in Alexandria whose practice spans photography, mixed media, and spatial intervention. Working at the intersection of architecture, art, and design, she interrogates the unwritten rules that shape perception and behavior within the spaces we inhabit. Her experimental approach incorporates augmented reality, public art, temporary installations, and audio-visual media, often responding to the surrounding social and political climate as well as her personal experiences. Interactivity and re-use are central to her methodology, as she explores images as both flat planes and spatial volumes, seeking to decolonize inherited ways of seeing and engaging with the built environment. Hamdy has participated in programs and exhibitions that merge art and architecture, was featured as “Ones to Watch” in No! Wahala Magazine, and collaborated with the Al Athar Lina initiative on an augmented reality mural addressing intangible cultural heritage in Cairo’s Al-Khalifa district.
