Sive Ntombana

Artist Profile

Sive Ntombana
South African art student in his final year
Sive Ntombana is a South African artist currently completing his final year (honours) of a BFA at Rhodes University. Rooted in his lived experience growing up in the village of Emanzamnyama in the Eastern Cape, his work explores the complexities of Xhosa masculinity, mental health, trauma, and identity. Ntombana sees himself as a son of his village—carrying its spirit and stories into his artistic practice wherever he goes. His current body of work centres around the use of soil pigments collected from his surroundings, embracing this natural medium as both a form of cultural expression and a method of healing. In 2025, he was awarded first prize in the ECDC Lithuba Lakho art competition, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum.
