Synthia Bahati is a Burundian-born photographer and visual artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), New Zealand. Her work centers on portrait photography that reflects self-determined ideals of beauty and gender, often collaborating with other creatives from the African diaspora. Bahati's practice is informed by fashion and driven by the community around her, exploring themes of identity and representation. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland. In 2022, she exhibited in Between the Gift and its Reprisal at Artspace Aotearoa. Bahati's work aims to create new narratives for the African community in Auckland, challenging stereotypes and celebrating authentic identities.
