Artist Profile
Taabu Munyoki
Kenyan contemporary artist
Taabu Munyoki (b. 1995) is a Kenyan contemporary artist based in Nairobi whose mixed-media paintings merge image transfer, screen printing, oil pastels, acrylic, and sewing to explore human interaction, memory, and environment. Working primarily on canvas, her compositions—often structured through grids, layered scenes, portraits, and figures drawn from everyday life—navigate the tension between past and present personal experiences. Central to her practice is a desire to challenge imposed structures and reframe narratives around Black womanhood in Kenyan society, foregrounding strength, individuality, and freedom. Her recent work frequently draws from intimate family histories, particularly her mother, whom she examines beyond traditional caregiving roles by repurposing personal archives and public imagery. Taabu holds a Fine Art degree from Kenyatta University (2019), has participated in residencies at Nafasi Art Space in Tanzania, is a two-time Manjano Art Competition (Students’ Category) winner, and works part-time at Wangechi Mutu Studio and Kobo Artists Studio.
