Artist Profile
Treasure Mlima
Self-taught South African artist
Treasure Mlima is a self-taught South African artist born in 1999. His work primarily consists of 2D prints that explore themes of space and identity through an African lens. Mlima’s creative process involves sourcing found images, which he digitally manipulates into collages. These digital compositions are then carved into wood and finished with a combination of oil-based and acrylic inks. Mlima views himself as a reflection of African existence in a global context. He considers his role as an artist to be that of a cultural practitioner, one with the responsibility to uncover what is often concealed. Through his art, he both exposes the present and envisions alternate realities, using subtle, neutral symbolism that neither confronts nor compromises the viewer.
