BE OPEN Art is delighted to announce Aluu Prosper, a contemporary Nigerian painter, as the Regional Artist of the Month for November within the Western Africa stage of its global art competition. Running from October through December, this regional stage highlights emerging talent from across Western Africa, celebrating artists from countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.
Known for his expressive, stylized figures, Aluu Prosper employs elongation, exaggeration, and his signature rendering of the iconic afro hairstyle to convey dignity and nobility in his subjects. By incorporating Nigerian newspapers into his paintings, Prosper creates a layered narrative that preserves the stories of today while reflecting on the past. His practice centers on Black identity and the belief that culture is preserved by continuously creating it.
As the November winner, Aluu Prosper now joins the competition for the Western Africa Regional Winner title, to be announced at the end of December. The selected regional winner will receive a €500 cash prize and enhanced global visibility through the BE OPEN Art platform.
The BE OPEN Regional Art competition exemplifies BE OPEN Art’s mission to support young and emerging artists around the world. By highlighting diverse creative voices across regions, the initiative fosters cultural exchange, artistic innovation, and global dialogue.
